Even before the Danish premiere, there are high expectations for the movie The Girl with the Needle. Magnus von Horn's drama had its world premiere in the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival in May, and it is among the three Danish movies that are shortlisted to become Denmark's bid for an Oscar candidate.
The film is about the young factory worker Karoline, who struggles to survive in Copenhagen in the years after World War I. When she becomes unemployed, abandoned, and pregnant, she meets Dagmar, who runs an underground adoption agency, where she helps mothers find foster families for their unwanted children. With nowhere else to go, a strong connection develops between the two women. However, Karoline's world falls apart when she discovers the truth.
The Girl with the Needle is based on the real-life Dagmar Overbye and is a disturbing tale of two women. The movie is produced for Nordisk Film Production by Malene Blenkov and Mariusz Wlodarski, featuring actors Vic Carmen Sonne, Trine Dyrholm, and Besir Zeciri in the leading roles.
